Sher

Biography

Sher was born and raised on farms and ranches in South Dakota.  While the farming/ranching lifestyle dictated that most everything plays a role in food production, she always had a special place in her heart for the animals, especially the poultry.  The joy and comfort one could get from "sitting with the hens" while they foraged for bugs and weeds and seeds was not lost on her.

Sher's education and career eventually brought her to the West Coast and for much of the time she kept poultry, making sure that her own children were involved at every level from incubation and hatching, to birds that were pets with names, as well as birds that were necessary as a food source, either for meat or eggs.  In 2006, Sher began educating herself about exhibition and breeding quality poultry, finally deciding on Jersey Giants as her breed of choice.  In 2009, she entered Giants in her first poultry show, winning Champion and Reserve Champion in the American Class with two of her blue Jersey Giants.  Later that year Sher attended the Jersey Giant National in Nebraska where she saw a young black Giant she fell in love with and eventually purchased.  He took the National Champion Giant win that year and has produced many champion offspring for her since then.

Now retired from a long career with the Department of Agriculture, Sher is the current president of the Pacific Northwest Poultry Association (PNPA) (see www.pacificnorthwestpoultry.com), the superintendent for PNPA Poultry Events, the vice-president of the National Jersey Giant Club, has authored many poultry articles for a variety of newsletters and magazines, and plays an active role in sponsoring youth... with birds, as a mentor and as a participant in youth activities.

For most of Sher's career and since retirement, she has been an instructor and facilitator.  She can discuss everything from providing the best quality of life for you and your pets can have together, to techniques in processing and preserving poultry for meat and eggs. Whether you’re just starting out with chickens and don't even know what breed you want to
